Neurons protect against fibrosis
Summary
New research published in Nature Immunology reveals a surprising role for neurons in preventing fibrosis. The study demonstrates that neurons, typically associated with nervous system function, can actively suppress the development of scar tissue (fibrosis) in affected tissues. The underlying mechanisms involve the release of specific neuronal factors that inhibit fibroblast activation and extracellular matrix deposition, key processes in fibrotic development. This discovery challenges existing understanding of fibrosis and opens new avenues for therapeutic interventions targeting neuronal pathways to prevent or reverse fibrotic diseases in various organs. The findings have significant implications for treating conditions like liver cirrhosis, pulmonary fibrosis, and kidney fibrosis.
