Granzyme K<sup>+</sup> CD8 T cells slow tauopathy progression by targeting microglia

Summary
McGavern et al. report a novel finding in Nature Immunology: a specific population of CD8+ T cells expressing the enzyme Granzyme K (GZMK) is present in brains characterized by high levels of tau protein. This is significant because tau accumulation is a hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases. The presence of GZMK-expressing CD8+ T cells suggests a potential protective role against neurodegeneration. This discovery opens new avenues for research exploring immune-mediated mechanisms in neurodegenerative diseases and potentially new therapeutic strategies.
