Summary
“Herd immunity” in CAR T-cell therapy refers to the potential for CAR T-cells from one patient to indirectly protect other patients from the same cancer, even if those other patients haven’t received CAR T-cell therapy themselves. This occurs if the CAR T-cells, by effectively eliminating the targeted cancer cells in the treated patient, reduce the overall spread and risk of cancer recurrence for other patients in close proximity or within a similar shared environment. This concept is theoretical and still under investigation. However, it raises the possibility that successful CAR T-cell treatments could have broader community-level benefits in controlling cancer outbreaks, similar to how herd immunity works with infectious diseases.
