Metabolic reprogramming in colorectal cancer: a review of aerobic glycolysis and its therapeutic implications for targeted treatment strategies

Summary

Colorectal cancer (CRC) cells exhibit metabolic reprogramming, primarily through aerobic glycolysis, also known as the Warburg effect. This process involves increased glucose uptake and lactate production even in the presence of oxygen, favoring rapid cell proliferation and survival. This review highlights the role of aerobic glycolysis in CRC development and progression, focusing on the key enzymes and pathways involved. Furthermore, it discusses the therapeutic potential of targeting these metabolic alterations to develop more effective and personalized CRC treatments. Disrupting glycolytic pathways could inhibit tumor growth, sensitize cancer cells to existing therapies, and ultimately improve patient outcomes.
