Intratumoral expression of IL-12 and CD40 ligand (CD154) from plasmids generates antitumor responses that eliminate tumoral T regs
Summary
Delivering plasmids encoding IL-12 and CD40L (CD154) directly into tumors can effectively trigger antitumor immunity. This gene therapy approach stimulates the immune system within the tumor microenvironment, leading to a robust anti-cancer response. Importantly, the expression of IL-12 and CD40L specifically targets and eliminates regulatory T cells (Tregs) within the tumor. Tregs normally suppress the immune system, hindering its ability to fight cancer. By eliminating these immunosuppressive cells, the plasmid-mediated gene therapy allows for a more effective immune attack on the tumor, ultimately contributing to tumor elimination.
