SATB1 is a key regulator of quiescence in stem-like CD8+ T cells – New Study

Nature Immunology, Published online: 22 August 2025; doi:10.1038/s41590-025-02257-w

Cui and colleagues identify the chromatin organizer protein SATB1 as a critical regulator of quiescence in stem-like progenitor CD8+ T cells that arise during chronic viral infection and cancer.

Summary

A new study in Nature Immunology reveals SATB1, a chromatin organizer protein, plays a crucial role in maintaining quiescence in stem-like progenitor CD8+ T cells. These T cells emerge during chronic viral infections and cancer, and their ability to remain dormant is essential for sustained immune responses. Cui et al. demonstrated that SATB1 acts as a key regulator in this process, suggesting that targeting SATB1 could potentially enhance T cell functionality and improve therapeutic outcomes in chronic diseases and cancer immunotherapy.
