Impaired autophagy by cepharanthine induces immunogenic cell death and enhances anti-PD-1 response in MSS-type colorectal cancer

Summary

Cepharanthine, a drug known to impair autophagy, shows promise in enhancing anti-PD-1 immunotherapy for MSS-type colorectal cancer (CRC), a subtype typically resistant to this treatment. Research indicates that cepharanthine induces immunogenic cell death (ICD) in CRC cells. This ICD releases danger signals, alerting the immune system and priming it to recognize and attack the cancer. By disrupting autophagy, cepharanthine promotes ICD, thereby sensitizing MSS-type CRC to anti-PD-1 therapy. The study suggests that combining cepharanthine with anti-PD-1 could be a viable strategy to overcome resistance and improve treatment outcomes in this challenging cancer subtype.
