(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Systems Biology of Energy Metabolism
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled postdoctoral researcher to join our team for an exciting project investigating mitochondrial function in adipocytes. The focus of the project is a poorly characterized protein localized to adipocyte mitochondria, predicted to act as an oxidoreductase. Our preliminary findings show that loss of this protein impairs insulin-stimulated conversion of glucose into fatty acids. In addition, mass spectrometry-based tracing of glucose reveals reduced labeling of TCA cycle intermediates, suggesting a broader defect in mitochondrial glucose metabolism.
The successful candidate will dissect the molecular and metabolic functions of this protein using a combination of in vitro and in vivo approaches. This includes leveraging our existing metabolomic tracing datasets to map altered metabolic pathways and analyzing an adipocyte-specific knockout mouse model to evaluate systemic metabolic consequences. Specifically, the project will integrate cutting-edge cell biology techniques, including CRISPR/Cas9-based gene editing (e.g., CRISPRi/a, base editing), confocal microscopy, and metabolic flux analysis in human adipocytes. These in vitro studies will be complemented by comprehensive in vivo metabolic phenotyping, including metabolic cage experiments and glucose and insulin tolerance tests in knockout mice. To gain mechanistic insights, the candidate will lead transcriptomic and proteomic profiling of both human adipocytes and mouse tissues.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Chromatin Biology and Transcriptional Regulation
The Baranello Lab – Drawing from our expertise in the fields of topoisomerase and cancer biology, we aim to answer fundamental questions about how transcription, replication and DNA topology are functionally coordinated in human cells. We use state-of-the-art approaches to assess transcriptomic, epigenomic and replisomic profiles, as well as molecular biology, advanced microscopy and drug screens to understand how topoisomerase regulation affects fundamental nuclear processes (key lab references: Baranello et al. Cell 2016; Wiegard et al. Molecular Cell 2021; Das et al. Molecular Cell 2022; Cameron et al. Science Advances 2023). The overall aim is to reveal novel cancer therapy targets and improved strategies for personalized treatment.
Recently we have identified a protein complex called “topoisome” in which the oncoprotein MYC recruits and increases the catalytic activities of both Topoisomerase 1 and 2 to promote high rates of transcriptional (Das et al. Molecular Cell 2022). The successful candidate will play a leading role in a full-time research project funded by the European Research Council Consolidator Grant, focused to address the functional role of the topoisome during transcription. Specifically we want to study the coordination of the topoisome and the transcriptional machinery. The outcome of this work is predicted to inspire a new strategy to target MYC in cancer, which will be tested in MYC-driven cancer models. This multidisciplinary project involves master biochemistry, master molecular biology, proteomics/genomics, and computational analysis. The postdoc will plan and execute experiments, analyze data, interpret, and present the results, supervise students as well as write scientific articles, initially under partial supervision but with greater independence going forward.
We are a young and dynamic research team with a well-established collaborative network. Our lab is located at Biomedicum, a top modern research building with a large repertoire of researchers and access to state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities. Our group is also associated to the laboratory of Dr. Levens at the National Institutes of Health (US) and Dr. Shiraige at Tokyo University (JP). The candidate will greatly benefit from this interdisciplinary environment, immersion in a highly stimulating and supportive research community, unique infrastructure, a buzzing capital, and scenic nature at your doorstep.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Psychoneuroimmunology
Sickness behavior refers to the coordinated set of behavioral changes and subjective experiences that occur during acute infections. In the field of psychoneuroimmunology, it is assumed that sickness behavior supports immune function as part of an adaptive response. Yet, this hypothesis has not been tested in humans. The aim of the current project is to examine how sickness behavior influences immune responses during a common cold, induced under controlled laboratory conditions.
The PI of the project is Associate Prof Julie Lasselin. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with the Emergency Medicine Research Center led by Associate Prof Daniel Wilhelms, at Linköping University. Part of the data collection can be conducted at Linköping University.
The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for developing and coordinating the project, including writing ethics applications and study preregistration, leading participant recruitment and data collection, conducting statistical analyses, and disseminating findings in recognized international journals. The role may also include contributing to the preparation of research grant applications to support future studies.
In addition, the postdoc is expected to participate in mentoring activities by supervising Master’s and/or PhD students and will be encouraged to take an active role in the group’s collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment. There will also be opportunities to develop independent research ideas related to the project and to engage in national and international collaborations.

About The Karolinska Institute, Sweden – Official Website
The Karolinska Institute sometimes known as the (Royal) Caroline Institute in English is a research-led medical university in Solna within the Stockholm urban area of Sweden. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The assembly consists of fifty professors from various medical disciplines at the university. The current rector of Karolinska Institute is Ole Petter Ottersen, who took office in August 2017.
The Karolinska Institute was founded in 1810 on the island of Kungsholmen on the west side of Stockholm; the main campus was relocated decades later to Solna, just outside Stockholm. A second campus was established more recently in Flemingsberg, Huddinge, south of Stockholm.
The Karolinska Institute is Sweden’s third oldest medical school, after Uppsala University (founded in 1477) and Lund University (founded in 1666). It is one of Sweden’s largest centres for training and research, accounting for 30% of the medical training and more than 40% of all academic medical and life science research conducted in Sweden.
The Karolinska University Hospital, located in Solna and Huddinge, is associated with the university as a research and teaching hospital. Together they form an academic health science centre. While most of the medical programs are taught in Swedish, the bulk of the PhD projects are conducted in English. The institute’s name is a reference to the Caroleans.
