Conjugate Vaccine Mechanisms, Design, and Immunological Memory – New Study
By linking bacterial polysaccharides to carrier proteins, conjugate vaccines transform weak antigens into triggers of lasting T cell-dependent immunity.
Summary
Conjugate vaccines boost the immune system by linking bacterial polysaccharides (sugars) to carrier proteins. Bacterial polysaccharides alone poorly stimulate the immune system, especially in young children, resulting in weak and short-lived immunity. Attaching them to proteins converts them into antigens that activate T cells. This T-cell activation leads to a robust and long-lasting immune response, creating immunological memory and providing protection against bacterial infections that polysaccharide vaccines alone couldn’t achieve.
