Research shows path toward protocells on Saturn's moon Titan – New Study

NASA research has shown that cell-like compartments called vesicles could form naturally in the lakes of Saturn’s moon Titan.

Summary

NASA research suggests that Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, may harbor conditions suitable for the formation of cellular life’s building blocks. Scientists have discovered that vesicles, membrane-bound compartments essential for cellular function, could spontaneously assemble in Titan’s methane-rich lakes. Unlike Earth’s phospholipid-based membranes, these potential vesicles are formed from acrylonitrile, a nitrogen-containing organic molecule prevalent on Titan. This discovery suggests that life based on different chemistry could potentially exist in Titan’s unique environment, broadening the understanding of habitability and the possibilities for life beyond Earth.
