Scientists make most authentic kidney replicas so far – New Study
Lab-grown organoids reproduce some of a kidney’s internal structure and function
Summary
Lab-grown kidney organoids, miniature 3D structures, are proving to be promising models for understanding kidney development, disease, and potential treatments. Scientists can now cultivate these organoids in the lab, mimicking key cellular organization and functions of a real kidney, including filtering waste products and producing urine-like fluid. While not perfect replicas, these organoids contain various kidney cell types arranged in a relevant architecture. Researchers use them to study genetic diseases affecting the kidneys, test drug efficacy, and explore possibilities for regenerative medicine, offering a less invasive and more ethical alternative to animal models and patient biopsies.
