Expanding the cytokine receptor alphabet reprograms T cells into diverse states
Summary
T cells, traditionally defined by a limited set of cytokine receptors, can be drastically reprogrammed by expanding this “receptor alphabet.” Research demonstrates that engineering T cells to express non-native cytokine receptors allows them to respond to novel signaling molecules, driving them into diverse and previously inaccessible activation states. This receptor reprogramming can induce expression of unique gene signatures and alter functional characteristics, potentially creating T cells with tailored capabilities. This opens avenues for designing T cell therapies that respond to specific cues in complex environments, ultimately enhancing their efficacy in fighting diseases like cancer.
