Cancer-induced nerve injury promotes resistance to anti-PD-1 therapy

Summary

Cancer-induced nerve damage can foster resistance to anti-PD-1 immunotherapy. Specifically, nerves damaged by the tumor release neuropeptides that suppress immune cell activity, particularly T cell function. This creates an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment, hindering the effectiveness of anti-PD-1 drugs designed to boost T cell activity. By interfering with the ability of T cells to recognize and kill cancer cells, nerve injury essentially shields the tumor from the effects of immunotherapy, leading to poorer treatment outcomes. Blocking these nerve signals could potentially improve anti-PD-1 response.
