PhD position summary/title: PhD position: Cognitive and neurobiological foundations of literacy acquisition 100%

The Jacobs Foundation’s international research network LEarning VAriability NeTwork Exchange (LEVANTE) investigates variability in children’s learning and development. As part of this network, our research group contributes to improving knowledge about the complexity of developmental variability and its impact on learning outcomes. LEVANTE aims to enable a better understanding of predictors of variability in learning, uncover underlying developmental processes, and demonstrate how variability in learning affects interventions for children.

As part of the LEVANTE network, our research group investigates the development of language and literacy skills in early school-age children who grow up both monolingually and multilingually. The aim of the research is to understand the variability in children’s learning trajectories and to investigate how brain development, the language environment, and learning experiences influence literacy acquisition. To this end, we are developing and evaluating new instruments for measuring language and literacy skills in children from diverse language backgrounds in order to improve the early detection of children with learning disabilities. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) will also be used to investigate the extent to which early structural features of the brain’s reading network can predict individual learning trajectories in literacy acquisition. The planned studies are part of a large-scale longitudinal study within the NCCR Evolving Language , funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

The project is being conducted under the direction of Dr. Iliana Karipidis and Prof. Silvia Brem at the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Psychiatric University Hospital of Zurich, University of Zurich.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Position in Human Voice Recognition Development 60 %

Computational linguistics is the science of understanding and modeling human language using computers. Since human language has many forms – spoken, signed and written – and involves various organs such as the vocal tract, ears, face, hands, eyes, and the brain, our research covers the full range of these modalities and senses.

We invite applications for a fully funded doctoral position to investigate voice recognition abilities in humans, with a focus on infancy and early development. PhD position summary/title: Doctoral position in the SNSF project “META: Margareta Klopstock’s Aesthetic Feminism” 80%

META aims to determine Margareta Klopstock’s (1728-1758) position in the literary network of the mid-18th century by pursuing two overarching research goals: First, it aims to expand the history of the European Enlightenment to include a potentially world-famous author by exploring her work. Second, it aims to demonstrate that her significance is not limited to her role as companion or muse of her famous husband, Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock. In her letters and literary texts, Margareta Klopstock enriches the spectrum of bourgeois feminism with a genuinely aesthetic feminism. This is rooted in the social practices of everyday women’s life (family, friendship, love, marriage, fashion, secretarial work, etc.), which produce new aesthetic forms and have a genuinely political dimension.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Infectious Disease Epidemiology & Modeling: Antimicrobial Resistance and Treatment Strategies for Gonorrhea 80 %

Neisseria gonorrhoeae has become resistant to all previously used antibiotics, leaving ceftriaxone as the last remaining treatment option. The spread of ceftriaxone resistance has raised global concerns about untreatable gonorrhea. For the first time in decades, a new antibiotic – zoliflodacin – offers hope and is expected to be introduced soon, with Thailand and South Africa among the first rollout countries.

The best strategy for introducing zoliflodacin is, however, unknown and further complicated by limited data on gonorrhea and antimicrobial resistance. This project aims to synthesize existing evidence, build country-specific mathematical models of gonorrhea transmission and resistance evolution, and identify optimal rollout strategies. The PhD student will focus on developing the transmission model for Thailand, incorporating surveillance and health system data, and will collaborate closely with another PhD student working on the South African model.
