We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to lead data integration and quantitative analyses for a project examining connections between human and environmental health around Lake Victoria, Kenya. The postdoctoral fellow will be based at Cornell University and will work primarily on a research project analyzing how cyanoHABs around Lake Victoria, Kenya are impacting aquatic food webs and human health risks. The work will require interdisciplinary approaches to integrate and analyze a multi-year dataset that includes both in-situ water quality monitoring data, fish sample analysis for nutrients and algal toxins, and household survey data. The additional integration of remote sensing data is also highly desirable.
The postdoctoral fellow will pursue established questions, and will also have considerable latitude to develop their own questions, as well as to contribute to group projects and global analyses. The fellow will be primarily supervised by Kathryn Fiorella and will also have close engagement with Peter McIntyre.
Our group’s work uses a planetary health approach to integrating research on environmental change and human health. Lake Victoria is a dynamic system that has experienced substantial and sustained ecological and water quality change, and accompanying changes to the patterns of fishing, fish consumption, and livelihoods and offers a rich system for these questions.

(11) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Associate – Entomology Geneva

We seek to hire a research and extension oriented postdoctoral associate to join a multi- year project to develop and implement IPM practices for managing the sour rot disease complex in wine grapes. Sour rot disease is caused by a complex of actors including yeast, acetic acid bacteria and Drosophila fruit flies. Damaged berries and high Drosophila populations facilitate the spread of sour rot through vineyards. The sour rot disease complex causes significant economic losses and methods of chemical control for Drosophila risk increasing insecticide resistant populations without significantly decreasing disease severity. Fungicides targeting Botrytis bunch rot are not effective for controlling sour rot since they do not target all causal microorganisms. An integrated approach that quantifies sour rot disease risk based on within-vineyard environmental and management conditions is necessary.

The successful candidate will work with PI Emery and other members of the team to assist NY growers in testing decision-support tools in commercial vineyards, investigating the relationship between Drosophila populations, fruit damage and disease severity and extending actionable management recommendations to all stakeholders. Specific responsibilities will be determined based on candidate’s interests and expertise. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands on experience working directly with growers and other stakeholders in research and extension to develop and implement research-based integrated pest management practices.

About Cornell University, New York, United States – Official Website

Cornell University is a private, statutory, Ivy League and land-grant research university in Ithaca, New York. Founded in 1865 by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White, the university was intended to teach and make contributions in all fields of knowledge—from the classics to the sciences, and from the theoretical to the applied. These ideals, unconventional for the time, are captured in Cornell’s founding principle, a popular 1868 quotation from founder Ezra Cornell: “I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study.”

The university is broadly organized into seven undergraduate colleges and seven graduate divisions at its main Ithaca campus, with each college and division defining its specific admission standards and academic programs in near autonomy. The university also administers two satellite medical campuses, one in New York City and one in Education City, Qatar.

Cornell is one of the few private land grant universities in the United States. Of its seven undergraduate colleges, three are state-supported statutory or contract colleges through the State University of New York (SUNY) system, including its agricultural and human ecology colleges as well as its industrial labor relations school. Of Cornell’s graduate schools, only the veterinary college is state-supported. As a land grant college, Cornell operates a cooperative extension outreach program in every county of New York and receives annual funding from the State of New York for certain educational missions. The Cornell University Ithaca Campus comprises 745 acres, but is much larger when the Cornell Botanic Gardens (more than 4,300 acres) and the numerous university-owned lands in New York City are considered.
