(06) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Health and Well-Being and Data Science  : Fully funded PhD Studentship in the ESRC Welsh Graduate School for the Social Sciences (WGSSS) Health and Well-Being and Data Science pathway (RS887)

The pathway combines observational, descriptive, and trials-based methods with large population-scale datasets to provide evidence on societies most pressing health challenges. Research informs evidence-based policy making to support people to make healthy lifestyle choices and/or to live better with illness and disability. More specifically, it examines the built and social environment and the impact that these have on multiple health and/or social outcomes. For example, a project may characterise the housing or school travel environment, and investigate the impact on injuries, mental health and educational outcomes; or shifting ageing and family-size demographics in relation to the epidemiology of chronic health conditions to address the pressing issue of the ‘care -gap’. Projects may use a range of methodologies, from observational to computational and population-level modelling. Such projects and associated methods are made possible through the linkage of administrative and health data, increasing demand for suitably qualified doctoral researchers capable of applying a mix of methods to complex social science problems.

(07) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Journalism, Digital Media and Democracy: Fully funded PhD Studentship in SRC Wales Graduate School for the Social Sciences WGSSS Journalism, Digital Media and Democracy – Media Studies pathway (RS894)

Media, Communications and Public Relations at Swansea has been consistently recognised for its excellence and is placed right at the top in UK league tables for various elements of its delivery. Priding itself on a strong sense of community, staff and students are involved at the cutting edge of the study of contemporary media and its impact. Our mix of esteemed practitioners and globally acknowledged scholars has expertise across a broad range of sub-themes within the Journalism, Democracy and Digital Media pathway.

For example, while we attend to the traditional aspects of print and broadcast journalism and the way that these cover key areas such as politics, conflict, financial affairs, the climate crisis and sport, our expertise extends into alternative digital news media, fact checking, disordered information, hate speech, racism and misogyny. Colleagues have extensively researched social media and all its dimensions, the metaverse, virtual and augmented reality, the wider implications of surveillance and technological interventions into all elements of contemporary life. We have strong impact in the fields of digital access for minority groups and the ways that news and journalism are both governed and regulated, and overarching all of this, our film and TV studies scholars offer insight into how all such elements are represented to wider audiences. Our public relations scholars are research active in looking at both the corporate functioning and the more disruptive elements within that profession, and how organisations digitally manage and maintain crises and brand identities. We would welcome applications that tap into these themes and add new and important dimensions.

Our strong links with the media sector itself – via our own Industry Panel – ensure the contemporary nature of our activities and provide a wide range of internship and work experience opportunities. In sum, studying a Media PhD at Swansea combines the benefits of accessing the most up-to-date experts in “media” in its widest sense with becoming part of a close-knit community of scholars who prioritise community and collegiality. We have research methods experts covering both quantitative and qualitative methods, and the pathway lead is a former recipient of ESRC funding both as a student and a researcher and is heavily invested in maximising the benefits of these excellent opportunities to develop stellar academic, industrial or public sector careers.

Major concerns include but are not limited to: impacts and management of climate change; local and regional environmental quality; conservation management; and post-Brexit environmental legislation.

The Department of Geography at Swansea is a vibrant and dynamic place for interdisciplinary doctoral studies. Our academics have a long history of successfully training PhD students for careers in the public, private, and third sectors, as well as in academia. Our staff have a wide range of expertise central to this pathway including quantifying and mitigating climate change, landscape carbon dynamics, flood management, pollution, environmental hazard management, wildfire mitigation, environmental archaeology, GIS and remote sensing applications, and cultural, urban, political, and economic geography. We are working in close collaboration with public and private sector organisations (e.g. DEFRA, Forest Research, Natural Resources Wales, MetOffice, UK National Parks, Fire and Rescue Services, Home Office, UK water companies and the Health Sector).

As part of the WGSSS, the Environmental Planning pathway is founded on longstanding institutional links between Swansea University’s Department of Geography, Cardiff University’s School of Geography and Planning, Aberystwyth University’s Department of Geography and Earth Sciences, Bangor University and the Countryside and Community Research Institute at the University of Gloucestershire. The departments collaborate extensively in PhD supervision, externally-funded research projects and postgraduate training.

Training is provided through a coordinated programme of standalone and residential modules in quantitative and qualitative social science methods, and science communication and a cohort-building postgraduate conference with participation from across the pathway. Options for specialist training include GIS and spatial data analysis, advanced quantitative research in SPSS, transport modelling, calculating environmental footprints, living lab methodologies, conservation research, randomized response techniques, cost-benefit analysis, spatial economic modelling, and satellite and drone remote sensing.

(11) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Nonlinear Dynamics Vibration Attenuation: Fully Funded PhD Studentship in Shock and Vibration Mitigation in Rotary Steerable Tools (RS900)

The project starts with a literature review on shock and vibration mitigation techniques in rotary steerable tools and similar downhole systems to establish the current state of the art and identify knowledge gaps. The project involves both linear and nonlinear dynamics modelling and analysis, as well as experimental testing. An equivalent test structure will first be constructed in the vibration laboratory at Swansea University. This demonstrator will closely replicate the industrial structure to ensure the relevance of the research undertaken in this PhD study.

A major aspect of the work is the development of optimal passive mitigation solutions through the enhancement of components such as elastomers. These elements will be selected and optimised to absorb and isolate shock and vibration while remaining functional under harsh geothermal conditions.

The candidate is expected to work closely with D-TECH and may undertake a secondment period to test and apply the developed methods on industrial-scale structures.

This highly interdisciplinary project combines mechanical engineering, materials science, and control systems, and will require both numerical simulation and experimental validation. The outcomes of this research aim to significantly enhance the reliability, efficiency, and operational lifespan of RSTs in geothermal applications, thereby supporting the advancement of sustainable energy technologies.
