PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Materials Engineering
You will investigate the fatigue performance of tungsten and tungsten alloys produced by electron beam powder bed fusion (PBF-EB). Due to the inherently brittle nature of tungsten, the sample preparation and testing procedures will require particular care and innovation. The project will focus on understanding how surface condition, microstructure, and residual defects influence fatigue behavior. Special emphasis will be placed on correlating defect characteristics with process monitoring data, in close collaboration with other researchers within the network. A key part of the work will involve developing and evaluating models to assess the structural integrity, performance, and lifetime of PBF-EB–manufactured tungsten components. This project offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the fundamental understanding of fatigue in refractory metal systems and to support the advancement of additive manufacturing for high-performance applications.
Deadline : 8 December 2025.

PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate in Technology and Social Change
This position is connected to the establishment of a new research area: Nuclear Futures, focusing on the cultural, sociotechnical, environmental, and political dimensions related to nuclear power, nuclear weapons, and nuclear waste. The research area is currently being developed as part of the Nuclear Studies research environment within the division of Technology and Social Change. You will be part of a research group that, in addition to yourself, includes an assistant professor and a postdoctoral researcher. The group will maintain close contact with the broader interdisciplinary research environment Nuclear Studies, which includes additional PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and senior colleagues. You will have considerable freedom to shape your dissertation topic in dialogue with your supervisors. Possible research directions include humanities and social science perspectives on emerging nuclear power technologies, the establishment of new uranium mining, deep time horizons in relation to long-lived radioactive waste, and civil society engagement in issues related to nuclear power, nuclear weapons, and nuclear waste—particularly in light of the current geopolitical situation.
Your work includes completing the coursework component of the PhD program comprising 66 credits, which corresponds to approximately two semesters. You will also participate in joint research activities within the smaller Nuclear Futures group and the larger Nuclear Studies environment, as well as in one of the weekly seminars at the division of Technology and Social Change. You are expected to contribute to the research group’s collaboration with actors outside academia, such as relevant authorities, civil society organizations, industry, local communities, and museums. A central part of the work involves writing scholarly texts in English, both independently and potentially in collaboration with others. Your doctoral thesis may take the form of a monograph or a compilation thesis based on a series of articles.
Deadline : 1 December 2025.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Visualization and Media Technology with a focus on immersive and situated visualization supported by conversational AI
The advertised position is part of a Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg (MAW) foundation-funded project that investigates the possibilities and implications of AI-enabled conversational guides on visitors’ learning and experiences in public educational environments, such as the Visualization Center C in Norrköping. The goals of the project are to identify AI-guide characteristics, investigate interactions between AI-guides, pedagogues and visitors, and explore the combination of visuo-verbal interactions for enhancing engagement and learning with interactive exhibits in public spaces. The position will focus on generating and evaluating visual representations, that is, visualizations of conversational moments that aid the transfer of meaning. You will collaborate closely with visualization researchers, AI-specialists, research engineers, educational scientists, and pedagogues, across Linköping University, the Visualization Center C, and Umeå University to study the impact of emerging AI-driven educational technologies on learning in public educational spaces.
You are expected to produce research outputs relevant to the fields of visualization, visual learning and communication, and conversational AI, as well as collaborate to produce research outputs in educational science. These outputs should include publications at international conferences, workshops, and journals. As this research is highly collaborative, you should thrive within and be passionate about contributing to a vibrant interdisciplinary research environment.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Trustworthy Machine Learning at SaS
Trustworthy machine learning is an umbrella term that provides methods and tools to ensure that AI and ML systems are verifiable, robust, secure, privacy-preserving, and ethical, which leads to greater adoption and positive societal impact. In safety-critical domains such as healthcare or autonomous driving, as well as in security-critical systems including AI-native networks or financial services, AI/ML that is not secure, robust, verifiable, or privacy-preserving can lead to safety risks, regulatory violations, and significant reputational damage. By making AI trustworthy, we facilitate large-scale and reliable use of AI across different industries.
