PhD position summary/title: PhD position on optimizing cooling processes and supply chains of heat-sensitive biological products by digital twins

Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa’s around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.

Empa’s Laboratory of Biomimetic Membranes and Textiles is a pioneer in physics-based modeling at multiple scales. We bridge the virtual to the real world by multi-parameter sensing and creating digital twins of heat-sensitive biological systems (food, humans) that can live together with their real-world counterparts. This project aims to better identify how perishable biological products react inside cold chain unit operations and to pinpoint why some products decay faster. For that purpose, we develop digital twins of the cargo, based on measured air temperature and humidity data in cold chains by commercial sensors, and deploy them in end-to-end virtual supply chains.

This project also aims to better understand the tradeoffs related to cooling technology for several use cases, for example, with smallholder farmers in the Global South. For that, detailed supply chain assessments will be performed. The work will enable us to identify better how individual perishable products react inside a cargo of millions in cold chain unit operations and to pinpoint why some products decay faster than others. This information will be used to quantify the environmental and economic impact of optimized cooling solutions and refrigerated supply chain solutions.

(02) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student in the field of Hybrid Metamaterials for Bone Replacement

Though rooted in medical applications, this challenge is largely a materials challenge. Existing medical implants are dominated by rigid structures that often lack the adaptability and sophistication required for dynamic biological environments. Despite the promising potential of soft hydrogels in combination with in situ mineralization that could offer greater flexibility and biocompatibility, research in this area remains limited, with numerous fabrication challenges yet to be addressed.

This collaborative project in close collaborration with partners at ETHZ and TU Delft aims to bridge the gap in current medical implant technology by designing, fabricating, and testing biomimetic, compliant metastructures made of hydrogel-ceramic nanocomposites capable of mechano-directed bone formation and designed to closely match the chemical, mechanical, and morphological properties of native bone. The role of the PhD student at Empa will be the development of synthesis processes using light-based 3D printing of hydrogel-ceramic composites in close collaboration with a PhD student at the Biomaterials Engineering Group at ETHZ and the identification of process-structure-property relationships enabling the efficient design and synthesis of complex metastructures for bone replacement.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Advanced Characterization of Soft and Hybrid Nanoparticles: Combining small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and fluorescence cross-correlation spectroscopy (FCCS)

Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa’s around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.

At Empa’s Centre for X-ray Analytics, we investigate bio-nano assemblies from lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) to polymer-based nanosystems using powerful analytical tools such as small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and fluorescence cross-correlation spectroscopy (FCCS). Our goal is to bring quantitative insights into how soft-matter systems self-assemble and function, with a particular emphasis on DNA/RNA-LNPs for next-generation gene therapeutics.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student in Chemical Analysis of Environmental Pollutants

Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa’s around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a complex class of thousands of chemicals. They are of increasing concern due to their persistence, potential toxicity and ubiquitous abundance in the environment. Understanding and evaluating their emission pathways is essential to plan and implement effective measures to reduce emission of PFASs. In this project, funded by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), the occurrence of PFASs in ambient air will be investigated. Sampling a broad range of PFASs simultaneously is challenging, as is their subsequent simultaneous analysis. This project aims at overcoming these challenges to reliably measure atmospheric levels of PFASs and model their respective emission strengths in Switzerland. The results are directly relevant to the FOEN and will support regulatory decisions regarding PFASs.
