Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate (Job Number: 25001302)
You will be working as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) in the Bourne-Worster group, within the Department of Chemistry at Durham University, which is located on the Science Campus, a 10-minute walk away from Durham old town. The post is available for 2.5 years, including a 1-year probation period, ideally starting by March 2026 (although flexibility around this date is possible). The usual starting salary is grade 7, spine point 30 (£38,249 per year before taxes).

As a PDRA in computational chemistry at Durham, you will have access to state-of-the-art instrumentation and facilities, including Durham’s High-Performance Computer, Hamilton (15,616 CPU cores, 36TB RAM and 1.9PB disk space). As part of the Northern 8 cluster, members of Durham University can also submit projects to the Tier 2 supercomputer Bede (32 IBM Power 9 dual-CPU nodes, each with 4 NVIDIA V100 GPUs and high performance interconnect). The Bourne-Worster group is also well-provisioned with computational resources and you will be able to carry out much of your routine work on our two new dedicated server machines (each 64 CPU cores, NVIDIA Tesla A30 GPU unit, 384GB RAM and over 24TB storage).

We are looking for an outstanding Postdoctoral Research Associate to join a research project based in the groups of Prof. Aurora J. Cruz-Cabeza and Prof. John Evans. The project is part of a new £7m EPSRC funded Programme Grant that brings together a team of researchers from the universities of Durham, Leeds and Manchester investigating the formation of Molecular Solid Solutions (MoSS).
Solid solutions are created when atoms or ions of a dopant are incorporated within the crystal structure of a host. Even at minute quantities, this can significantly alter the properties of crystals. Although solid solutions in metals and inorganic materials are well-studied, little is known about systems where the host and dopants are small organic molecules (MoSS). There is huge potential of utilising MoSS for changing and modulating materials properties, such as solubilities, crystal polymorph, crystal sizes and shapes and rates of dissolution.
The overall goal of the consortium is to develop and apply cutting-edge techniques in crystal synthesis, characterisation and modelling to study and generate a new understanding of MoSS. These advances will have applications across multiple sectors, including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and food industries.
There are multiple opportunities to collaborate, take part in network events and undertake research placements within this project.
You will have a PhD in Physical Sciences or a closely related field, and you will have a background in the modelling of molecular crystals. The key responsibilities are to develop, test and implement different modelling methodologies into novel workflows to predict MoSS formation. The successful candidate will be involved in the supervision of a PhD student during the duration of the position and will have significant of opportunities for career development.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Condensed Matter Physics (Job Number: 25001370)
A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available to pursue experimental research in the field of complex magnetism within the Durham Condensed Matter Physics group. The position is associated with a new two-year Grant on “Advanced materials for next-generation spintronics: The deterministic control of altermagnets” funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The research builds upon our expertise in understanding and predicting novel magnetostructural coupling schemes in quantum materials. We employ theoretical analyses of crystal and magnetic symmetry, characterised experimentally by state-of-the-art synchrotron X-ray and neutron scattering experiments performed at large-scale national and international facilities. The post holder will work directly with Dr. Roger Johnson and other members of his research group within the Durham Condensed Matter Physics research section, and in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Warwick, University College London, and the XMaS beamline at the European Synchrotron Radiation Source, Grenoble, France.
The recent discovery of altermagnetism marks a transformative leap in the potential application of antiferromagnets in spintronics. The goal of the research is to address a key scientific challenge before altermagnetic materials can be exploited in technologies of the future. The challenge is to find novel methods of deterministic antiferromagnetic domain control through the application of external fields that modify the underlying crystal symmetries. The postholders will be expected to display initiative and creativity in this endeavour, together with the appropriate skills and knowledge, required to work with Dr. Johnson and collaborators to deliver the research aims. These include (1) imaging altermagnetic domains through interference resonant X-ray diffraction, (2) establish novel methods of deterministic strain-gated altermagnetic domain switching under relatively small applied magnetic fields, and (3) democratise principles of best practice for the study of advanced materials under applied stress. The post holder is therefore expected to have experience and familiarity with scattering techniques employed at synchrotron X-ray and/or neutron facilities in the study of crystal and magnetic structures, ideally including the in-situ application of uniaxial strain to bulk single crystals.
The post holder is expected to be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a small research team. It is expected that the post holder will enhance the international contacts of the group and wider impact of the research through the presentation of work at international conferences and exchange visits to our international project partner at the Advanced Photon Source, USA. The post holder will also have the opportunity to aid in the supervision of postgraduate research students within the group, contribute to the undergraduate teaching within the Department, and partake in public engagement activities and the publication of case studies.
