Farming and draft animals didn’t stratify societies in Carpathian Basin

Contrary to expectations, the introduction of farming and draft animals in the Carpathian Basin did not automatically lead to increased social stratification. Archaeological evidence suggests that despite the potential for some households to accumulate more resources and labor through these agricultural practices, communities maintained a relatively egalitarian structure. Kinship ties, cooperative labor, and mechanisms for resource redistribution likely played a crucial role in preventing significant wealth disparities. This challenges the common assumption that agricultural innovation inevitably results in hierarchical societies, highlighting the complex interplay between technology, environment, and social organization in early agricultural communities.
