Triassic freshwater deposits at Petrified Forest preserve diverse tanystropheids – New Study/Science Updates

Researchers report three distinct tanystropheid taxa from the upper Blue Mesa Member of the Chinle Formation in the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona, including a new genus and species, Akidostropheus oligos, with a distinctive back spike emanating from the spine.

Summary

A new genus and species of tanystropheid archosauromorph, Akidostropheus oligos, has been identified from the upper Blue Mesa Member of the Chinle Formation in Arizona’s Petrified Forest National Park. This discovery, alongside two other distinct tanystropheid taxa, expands the understanding of these reptiles during the Late Triassic period. Akidostropheus oligos is particularly notable for its unique back spike originating from the spine, distinguishing it from other known tanystropheids.
