How do you tell how old an astronomical object is? I mean, the next time the moon is in the sky, take a look at it. How would you even begin to answer that question?
Summary
Determining the age of astronomical objects relies on various techniques. For the Moon, we use radiometric dating of lunar rocks brought back by Apollo missions, revealing an age of about 4.5 billion years. For stars, we analyze their color, brightness, and composition; younger stars are often hotter and bluer. Star clusters’ ages are estimated by identifying the “turn-off point” on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. Galaxies’ ages are determined by studying the ages of their constituent stars and their redshift, which indicates how far back in time we are observing them. Each method relies on established physics and astronomical observations.
