New research from the University of St Andrews has found that giant free floating planets have the potential to form their own miniature planetary systems without the need for a star.

University of St Andrews researchers have discovered that rogue, free-floating giant planets can potentially host their own miniature planetary systems, completely independent of a star. These solitary planets, previously thought to be barren, can accumulate dust and gas during their formation, creating a circumstellar disk similar to those surrounding young stars. This disk can then coalesce into smaller “exomoons” orbiting the giant planet. The discovery challenges previous assumptions about planetary formation and opens up the possibility of habitable environments existing beyond traditional star-centric systems.
