The progression of leaf coloring from green to the reds, oranges, and yellows of the fall season can be a spectacular sight to behold, but this process is also an important part of a plant’s developmental cycle.

The vibrant colors of autumn leaves are a result of complex processes in deciduous plants. As days shorten, chlorophyll, the pigment that makes leaves green, breaks down, revealing pre-existing yellow and orange pigments (carotenoids). Red pigments (anthocyanins) are also produced in some species. This color change isn’t just aesthetic; it’s a sign the plant is preparing for winter. It’s actively withdrawing valuable nutrients from the leaves and storing them in the roots and stem, essentially conserving resources before the leaves are shed.
