Culture influences men's experiences with intimate partner violence, study finds – New Study/Science Updates



Historically, stereotypical ideas of intimate partner violence (IPV) have overlooked or minimized the experiences of male victims. Simultaneously, perspectives of men’s experiences with IPV are influenced by country-specific cultural contexts.



Summary

Stereotypical views of IPV have traditionally neglected male victims, leading to a skewed understanding of the issue. Male victims’ experiences are often minimized or ignored within these established narratives. Crucially, perceptions and experiences of men facing IPV are significantly shaped by the unique cultural contexts of their respective countries. This means that the prevalence, understanding, and reporting of male IPV can vary substantially based on societal norms and cultural expectations related to masculinity, relationships, and help-seeking behaviors in different nations.
