The untapped potential of radiation and immunotherapy for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer
Summary
Hormone receptor-positive (HR+) breast cancer, while treatable, often develops resistance to endocrine therapy. Emerging research explores combining radiation therapy with immunotherapy to overcome this challenge. Radiation can trigger an immune response by releasing tumor-specific antigens and stimulating immune cell infiltration. Immunotherapy, in turn, boosts the immune system’s ability to recognize and destroy cancer cells. This synergistic approach shows promise in preclinical models, potentially improving local control and even inducing systemic anti-tumor immunity in HR+ breast cancer. Clinical trials are underway to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this novel combination.
