Full professorship (W3) for “Transfusion Medicine and Immunology” (f/m/d)

The holder of the position will represent the entire spectrum of transfusion medicine in research and teaching. In cooperation with the DRK Blood Donation Service Baden-Württemberg/Hessen, the successful candidate will be appointed Medical Director of the Institute for Transfusion Medicine and Immunology Mannheim and granted leave of absence to fulfil her/his task at the DRK Blood Donation Service Baden-Württemberg/Hessen as part of the appointment to the W3 professorship under the Jülich model. The Mannheim Institute is part of the DRK Blood Donation Service Baden-Württemberg/Hessen, a supra regional non-profit organization that supplies medical facilities with blood products from all areas of transfusion medicine. The DRK Blood Donation Service is a leading institution in Germany in the field of cell and immunotherapy; the successful candidate is expected to play a key role in further developing this field at the Mannheim and Heidelberg campuses.

In research, the W3 professorship for transfusion medicine and immunology should actively participate in one or more of the priority research areas and/or in the cross-sectional research areas of the Medical Faculty Mannheim or the Medical Faculty Heidelberg. In particular, participation in the Cluster of Excellence “SynthImmune” and in CRC 1709 (Cellular Plasticity in Malignant Myeloid Diseases – From Mechanisms to Therapy) is desired. Within the framework of the MaReCuM model study program, the W3 professorship for Transfusion Medicine and Immunology is expected to participate in teaching in accordance with the regulations for W3 professorships in the Jülich model.

Prerequisites for application are a completed university degree in medicine, a qualified doctorate, and pedagogical eligibility, which is usually demonstrated by teaching experience. Furthermore, additional scientific achievements (a habilitation, a successfully evaluated junior professorship, or habilitation-equivalent qualifications) in accordance with article 47 (2) of the Higher Education Act of the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg, as well as recognition as a board-certified specialist in transfusion medicine, or internal medicine and hematology and oncology, must be proven. Internationally recognized excellence in research, teaching, and patient care, relevant management experience, successful acquisition of extramural funding, and teaching skills are expected, as are cooperation and leadership skills and commitment to academic self-administration.

The position is tenured. Upon fulfilment of the general requirements under civil service law and budgetary law, the appointment to the professorship will usually be made directly on the basis of a lifetime civil servant status. With regard to the duties as future director of the Institute for Transfusion Medicine and Immunology and as head of the DRK Blood Donation Service Mannheim, a separate contract will be concluded with the DRK Blood Donation Service Baden-Württemberg/Hessen gGmbH.
