Analysis of variations in the response of cancer immunotherapies in well-controlled ex vivo replicate cultures identifies a rare CD8+ T cell subset, Spark T cells, that drives stochastic responses. Spark T cells explain variable responses to immunotherapies in cancer patients and represent a therapeutic target to overcome resistance to treatment.
