The Academic CV Structure
1. Header
Include your name, professional email (university email is often preferred), phone number, and links to your LinkedIn or ResearchGate profile.
2. Education
List these in reverse-chronological order.
• [Degree Name], [University Name] | [Dates]
• Thesis Title: [Full Title]
• Supervisor: [Name]
• Key Modules: (Only list those highly relevant to the PhD project).
3. Research Interests
A short paragraph or bulleted list (3–5 items) outlining your specific areas of interest. This shows the admissions committee that your goals align with their department.
4. Research Experience
This is the “meat” of your CV. Don’t just list titles; describe your contributions.
• [Role, e.g., Research Assistant], [Lab/Department] | [Dates]
• Detail the methodologies used (e.g., CRISPR, Python scripting, archival research).
• Highlight any independent projects or significant data analysis.
5. Publications & Presentations
If you don’t have peer-reviewed papers yet, don’t worry. Include:
• Conference Posters/Talks: Even departmental symposiums count.
• Works in Progress: Mark these as “Under Review” or “In Preparation.”
6. Technical Skills
Categorize these so they are easy to scan.
• Laboratory: (e.g., PCR, Cell Culture, Spectroscopy)
• Software/Programming: (e.g., R, MATLAB, LaTeX, SPSS)
• Languages: (Include proficiency levels)
7. Awards & Funding
List scholarships, dean’s list placements, or travel grants. This proves that other institutions have already “vetted” your potential.
