(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral Scholar, Quantum Memories with Vacancies in Diamond

Under her Canada Excellence Research Chair in photonic quantum science and technologies, Dr. Urbasi Sinha is setting up a state-of-the-art quantum optics lab that will work on different aspects of quantum technologies using photons. It will emphasize strong synergy between application-driven research, which addresses immediate needs, and foundational research, which enables the technologies of the future. 

As a part of this initiative, the successful candidate will develop and conduct quantum memories research with vacancies in diamond, especially nanofabrication experiments related to nitrogen, silicon and/or other vacancies in diamond. They will receive a $5,000 CAD research and travel allowance to support such requirements, subject to approval by the Principal Investigator.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Scholar, Health & Wellness Lab, Faculty of Kinesiology

The Health and Wellness Lab, led by Dr. Culos-Reed, conducts exercise oncology research and implementation of programs to enhance the quality of life of individuals living with and beyond cancer. We are looking for 1-2 post-doctoral fellows to join our work. The post-doctoral fellow research position(s) will focus on leading components of our Canadian Institutes of Health Research-Canadian Cancer Society, and Alberta Cancer Foundation-supported Project EXCEL: Exercise for Cancer to Enhance Living Well. This will include supporting data set management and analyses (REDCap), leading publications, and development of policy briefs. The post-doctoral fellows will mentor junior graduate students (MSc and PhD) and undergraduate students and will take on a lead role within the research project. There is an opportunity for teaching within the Faculty if interested and qualified. 

The post-doctoral fellows will be supervised by Dr. Nicole Culos-Reed. Duties will include management of EXCEL database analyses, development of policy briefs, and advocacy work to build exercise into standard cancer care. Within this role, the postdoctoral fellows will be encouraged and supported to build their independent research program across exercise oncology and will be supported to apply for external awards locally and nationally.

The successful candidate will work on a CIHR-funded, internationally collaborative project using zebrafish genetic models of vascular stabilization. The project aims to understand the genetic factors that contribute to cerebral small vessel disease and stroke using mechanistic development biology, molecular biology and genetic approaches.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Associate in Computational Oncology

The Morrissy Lab is seeking a highly motivated scientist with expertise in bioinformatics and data science to join our team as a Postdoctoral Associate focused on understanding immunotherapy responses in solid tumors. The candidate will use state-of-the-art analytic approaches to investigate multi-omics data and derive an in-depth understanding of tumor ecosystem dynamics in clinical samples from immunotherapy trials ¿ including phenotypic and functional cell heterogeneity, tumor and microenvironment cell niches, and cellular crosstalk. This research is primarily focused on cohorts of single-patient and phase I clinical trial participants treated with CAR T-cells (see Zemp el, 2024, in revision at Nature; preprint on medRxiv), and identifying mechanisms of immunotherapy response and resistance from longitudinally-collected blood and tumor tissue samples. The candidate will employ innovative bioinformatics and machine learning approaches to integrate single cell and spatial datasets from clinical samples with data from ongoing preclinical studies, further incorporating genomics and proteomics profiles from in-house or public repositories.

(10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Scholar in Gut-Brain Communication

Seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher with interest in gut-brain communication in health and disease. We have a long-standing interest in exploring gut-brain communication (if curious see our highlighted publications: Biological Psychiatry, Molecular Psychiatry, and Molecular Metabolism), and current projects in the lab include investigation of novel neurocircuits and 
behaviors affected but gut peptides such as GLP-1, GIP and amylin, as well as the vagus nerve.  

This position will require competence using molecular and in vivo experimental techniques. Work will include rodent behavioral testing, rodent neuroanatomy, confocal microscopy, in vivo 
opto/chemogenetics and metabolic characterization. It will also include work with genetic vectors and pharmacological techniques in combination with stereotaxic surgery in rats. 

Performing fundamental molecular techniques including RNAscope, immunohistochemistry, ELISAs and PCR will also be routine, support to learn these methods will be offered if needed. 
The successful candidate must have experience in working with at least some of the above mentioned methods and willingness to learn the others.

(11) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Scholar_Metagenomics of Oil Field Samples, Faculty of Science

The postdoc will be part of an interdisciplinary research team that uses metagenomics and molecular biology to track and analyze environmental and industrial samples. The postdoc will join a large and dynamic team that enjoys close collaboration with other researchers in environmental microbiology and public health microbiology, spanning different departments and faculties at the University of Calgary. This research culture includes collaboration with industry from large global corporations to local start-ups working on energy and environment related issues.

The successful applicant will join the Geomicrobiology Group led by Prof. Casey Hubert consisting of approximately 20 other researchers (staff, post docs, graduate students and undergraduate students). The post-doc will have opportunity to collaborate within this team, mentor students and interact with corporate industry seeking solutions and input on geomicrobiology challenges and opportunities. The Geomicrobiology Group has funding from Mitacs, NSERC, Genome Canada and other industry and government sources. The post-doc will have the chance to contribute to funding applications, as well as prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals based on research findings.

The successful candidate will be based at the University of Calgary and their research will focus on archived samples from oil industry assets (e.g., pipelines, oil reservoirs, tanks, water samples) and performing DNA extraction, metagenomic sequencing, bioinformatic analysis, and digital PCR assay design and testing. Hydrogenase-containing bacteria and archaea as well as sulfate-reducing bacteria and archaea are high priorities for this project; these bacteria can cause corrosion in traditional oil field contexts as well as related to renewable energy applications involving underground H2 storage where additional risks include resource degradation via hydrogenotrophic metabolism.
