Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow to project INSPIRI
The Postdoctoral Researcher will join the research project INSPIRI: Imaginative Narratives and Scenarios for insPIring Restoration and Innovation for European seas and water systems. Progress toward the European Green Deal, the Mission Restore Our Ocean and Waters, and related EU climate, biodiversity, and pollution targets is hindered by governance barriers such as mistrust among decision-makers, lack of public support, and modest policy action. Building on creative participatory methods, the INSPIRI project will contribute to overcoming these challenges. The INSPIRI consortium will innovate by engaging with a wide range of stakeholders to imagine aspirational futures for EU waters using the Nature Futures Framework. Through case studies across the four Mission Lighthouse regions, we will co-create visions of desirable futures for ocean and water systems with stakeholders in the following case studies: the Danube Basin, the Bay of Biscay, the Baltic and the Mediterranean. Aligned with key EU strategic objectives and targets, these will then become goals for back-casting and modelling regional scenarios. The outputs from both visioning and modelling exercises will serve as inputs into regional Transformation Labs that bring together decision and policy-makers, experts and other stakeholders from the Lighthouse regions to chart actions towards implementing sustainable futures for EU waters. We will develop innovative scientific and artistic visualizations in each case study as well as at the pan-European level for both 2030 and 2050 time-horizons. Finally, through a creative, multi-layered communication, dissemination, and exploitation strategy, leveraging the full potential of art-science collaboration for motivating change, we will inspire key target groups to take meaningful action. Our consortium, collaborating closely with the Mission Lighthouses and governance structures, brings together world-class expertise in stakeholder engagement, visioning, modelling, policy analysis, and art-science collaborations to ensure we can deliver on the ambitious work plan. All our data will contribute to the European Digital Twin of the Ocean. Overall, INSPIRI will support action to achieve an ambitious EU vision for its waters by 2050.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Inorganic Chemistry
Within the next century, the energy demand for cooling applications is predicted to increase dramatically. As current refrigeration techniques rely on the use of ozone-depleting gases with substantial global warming potential, the need for more environmentally friendly systems is urgent. The barocaloric effect relies on phase transitions in solid-state materials to drive a cooling cycle and thus avoids the need for gases. In principle, the barocaloric effect can appear in any material with solid–solid phase transitions, yet a very small fraction of all possible systems has been explored in this context.
This project will investigate a range of materials to determine whether the barocaloric effect is present and try to establish structure–property relationships. Ample use will be made of single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction as well as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). At the end of the project, the candidate will have gained valuable experience in synthesis, material characterisation, and thermodynamic measurements.
The ideal applicant is motivated, organised, and has a problem-solving mindset and the ability to work both independently and in a team. Experience of and interest in crystallography (powder, single crystal, and/or total scattering), and/or caloric materials is desirable. The applicant should have a good knowledge of English, both orally and in writing.
This recruitment is connected to the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE, wise-materials.org). WISE, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, is the largest-ever investment in materials science in Sweden and will encompass major efforts at Sweden’s foremost universities over the course of 10 years. The vision is a sustainable future through materials science.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in X-ray photoemission spectroscopy
We have a postdoctoral fellow opening for a candidate to work with Prof. Martin Beye to further develop the X-ray photoemission spectroscopy instrument POLARIS. The instrument is located at the synchrotron radiation facility PETRA III in Hamburg. It enables to study surface reactions at high temperatures and at pressures currently up to 1 bar, depending on the gas composition. Concepts exist to enable studies at even higher pressures that, within this project, should get implemented and applied to relevant scientific studies in this project.
Furthermore, the project should also work towards integrating a pulsed optical laser that allows to trigger chemical reactions that can then be followed with POLARIS at ambient pressures. This development also requires an upgrade of the detector system in POLARIS, but will enable following the reaction dynamics for example in the Haber-Bosch process at close to industrially relevant conditions. The candidate will thus combine operando X-ray spectroscopy with transient studies in order to observe reaction intermediates and follow their evolution under reaction conditions. This project aims to enable the acquisition of basic atomistic knowledge around a suite of fundamental reactions, often using hydrogenation reactions to produce energy carriers or chemical feedstock materials from CO2 – a reaction that will become more and more important for societies that strive for sustainable future.
