Hello everyone!
My name is Yilan Liu, and I am an Assistant Professor at the University of Waterloo (Canada), with research focused on synthetic biology.

Our laboratory is currently recruiting one PhD student and one postdoctoral fellow to participate in projects supported by the Canada Impact+ Research Training Awards (CIRTA).
The CIRTA program targets international talent and provides:
PhD students: CAD $40,000 per year for 3 years
Postdoctoral fellows: CAD $70,000 per year for 2 years

Research Areas
Developing functional probiotics using synthetic biology, with applications in health biotechnology and food safety.
Producing and degrading bioplastics using synthetic biology, focusing on clean technology and environmental sustainability.
These topics align closely with CIRTA priority areas (such as biotechnology, health biotechnology, clean technology, and environmental and climate resilience) and involve cutting-edge work in synthetic biology, computational biology, metabolic engineering, and biomaterials synthesis.
Our group offers a strong research team, state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, and close industrial collaborations, providing excellent interdisciplinary training opportunities.

Eligibility
International students (not currently enrolled at a Canadian institution) with a Master’s degree in bioengineering, synthetic biology, microbiology, or a related field.
Excellent academic background (high GPA, strong research experience) and proficiency in English (TOEFL/IELTS required).
Strong interest in synthetic biology; prior experimental experience is preferred.
