Trilayer moiré superlattices unlock tunable control of exciton configurations – New Study/Science Updates

Moiré superlattices are periodic patterns formed when two or more thin semiconducting layers are stacked with a small twist angle or lattice mismatch. When 2D materials form these patterns, their electronic, mechanical, and optical properties can change significantly.

Summary

Moiré superlattices arise from stacking layered semiconductors with a slight twist or lattice difference, creating periodic interference patterns. These patterns, especially when formed by 2D materials, dramatically alter the original material’s characteristics. The moiré pattern modifies the electronic structure, impacting the material’s behavior as a conductor or insulator. This also affects the mechanical properties such as flexibility and strength, and the optical properties such as light absorption and emission. The tunability offered by these superlattices provides an exciting platform for creating novel materials with customized functionalities.
