Soft materials hold onto 'memories' of their past for longer than previously thought – New Study/Science Updates

If your hand lotion is a bit runnier than usual coming out of the bottle, it might have something to do with the goop’s “mechanical memory.”

Summary

Some hand lotions exhibit “mechanical memory,” meaning their viscosity (thickness) can be affected by how they’re handled. If your lotion is thinner than normal, it could be due to repeated squeezing or shaking. This process can disrupt the lotion’s internal structure, causing it to flow more easily, similar to how some materials “remember” past deformation. This thinning effect is temporary, and the lotion’s viscosity usually recovers over time when left undisturbed. Essentially, the lotion’s handling history impacts its consistency upon dispensing.
