'Publish or perish' evolutionary pressures shape scientific publishing, for better and worse – New Study/Science Updates

While developing his theory of natural selection, Charles Darwin was horrified by a group of wasps that lay their eggs within the bodies of caterpillars, with the larvae eating their hosts alive from the inside-out.

Summary

Charles Darwin was deeply disturbed by parasitoid wasps. These wasps lay their eggs inside living caterpillars, where the larvae hatch and consume the caterpillar alive, a process Darwin found horrifying. This gruesome example of natural selection, although seemingly cruel, challenged his understanding and acceptance of the mechanism driving evolution. Despite his revulsion, he recognized the wasps’ behavior as a product of the same natural laws he sought to explain.
