Fewer than 1 in 4 Australians work in a gender-balanced occupation – New Study/Science Updates



Australia’s workforce is almost evenly split between men and women. Yet fewer than one in four Australians work in a gender-balanced occupation.



Summary

Despite near equal representation in the workforce, Australia suffers from significant occupational gender segregation. The workforce participation rate for men and women is nearly equal, however, very few Australians (less than 25%) work in occupations where the gender balance is even. This means that the vast majority of jobs are heavily dominated by either men or women, highlighting a clear imbalance in career choices and opportunities based on gender.
