Historical and current population DNA reveals at least 12 species of rocket frogs, three of which already extinct – New Study

A group led by University of São Paulo (USP) researchers in Brazil has described a new genus of frogs, Dryadobates, also known as rocket frogs, which was previously considered a single species. The study was published in the Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History.

Summary

Brazilian researchers have identified a new frog genus, Dryadobates, or “rocket frogs,” previously misclassified as a single species. Led by University of São Paulo (USP) scientists, the research, published in the Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History, clarifies the taxonomic classification of these frogs, revealing distinct genetic and morphological differences warranting their separation into a new genus. This discovery highlights the ongoing need for taxonomic revision and a deeper understanding of amphibian biodiversity, particularly in biodiverse regions like Brazil.
