𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗮 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁+ 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘀 (𝗖𝗜𝗥𝗖) program to attract world-leading researchers to come and work at Canadian universities

Canada has launched the 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗮 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁+ 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘀 (𝗖𝗜𝗥𝗖) program to attract world-leading researchers to come and work at Canadian universities.

Applicants must be international researchers working and residing outside of Canada; this includes expatriates wishing to return to Canada.

One of the eight key strategic priority areas is environment, climate resilience, and the Arctic (check the link above for other priority areas).

CIRC holders will receive one of two award values:

$8 million over eight years ($1 million per year); or

$4 million over eight years ($500,000 per year)


depending on research costs/needs. There is also the potential for a four-year extension at a rate of 50% of the initial award value.

Nominees must be full professors or associate professors or, if recruited from outside the academic sector, must possess the necessary qualifications to be appointed at these levels. Once a successful nominee takes up their chairholder appointment, the host institution will be expected to appoint them as a full professor, or as an associate professor with a promotion to full professor within two years of starting their appointment.

There are two application rounds in March and June. However, interested candidates must first apply to universities who will then submit the application to the CIRC program. Different universities have different instructions (see below for instructions at a subset of universities), but 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗺𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆.
