Position Title: Associate professor in business administration, specialization finance and accounting (Umeå University)

Requirements: According to Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance, a person shall qualify for appointment as Associate Professor if he or she has demonstrated educational expertise and holds a doctorate or has attained equivalent academic competence or other professional skills relevant with regards to the subject area of the appointment. The subject area for this position is Business Administration, with a specialization in Finance and Accounting. We are looking for someone with a doctoral degree in Business Administration or equivalent scientific competence.

Summary: The work includes teaching in programs as well as courses at undergraduate and advanced level, and then mainly in Finance and Accounting. You participate in development work, supervision and in joint activities within Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics. Teaching is often conducted in teams and courses are offered in both Swedish and English. The employment includes competence development up to 20% of your working time. If you have external research funds, it is possible for you to use them for research up to 80% of the annual working time.

Position Title: Postdoc in eHealth with application within physiotherapy (Umeå University)

Summary: As a postdoctoral fellow you will work in a project where we evaluate new digital methods to provide support for older people to get started with and maintain fall prevention exercises. In the research group, we have together with older adults developed the app Safe Step, which is now being evaluated in a national randomized controlled study with more than 1,600 participants over the age of 70 years.

Position Title: Postdoctoral Fellow(2yr)formation of methylmercury in contaminated sedimen (Umeå University)

Requirements: Eligible to be employed as a postdoctoral fellow is a person who has completed a doctoral degree or a foreign degree that is deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree in biogeochemistry or an equivalent subject area with a focus on mercury biogeochemistry. In the first instance, it should be considered as having completed a degree no more than three years before the end of the application period. If there are special reasons, it may be considered as having completed a doctoral degree earlier. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave or clinical service, positions of trust within trade unions or other similar circumstances. You have experience of and an interest in experimental research. A very good knowledge in written and spoken English is required. Experience of field sampling, work with sediments or soils, synchrotron-based X-ray spectroscopy (eg EXAFS), experiments with enriched isotope tracers, molecular characterization of natural organic matter with MS techniques and ICPMS techniques are meritorious.

Summary: The project of Umeå University will include field sampling of sediment and water, and potentially biota. You will characterize the chemical speciation of Hg with synchrotron-based X-ray spectroscopy and the molecular composition on organic matter with mass spectrometry and study in laboratory experiments how the formation of methylmercury is controlled by these factors. The project aims to generate practically applicable tools for improved risk assessments of contaminated sediments through focused fundamental research of biogeochemical processes.

Position Title: Postdoc in Cognitive Neuroscience

We are looking for a candidate with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team of junior and senior researchers from various disciplines. The appointment includes planning and performance of research within the project, mainly data collection, analyzing and reporting of results. It is desirable with clinical and/or research experiences in neuropsychological testing.

Experiences of MR data analyses is considered an additional qualification. Excellent verbal and written English communication skills are desirable. Summary: The announced position is a part of the Umeå HIT Study (Umeå University), an interdisciplinary study. The first phase of the study was a randomized controlled study to determine the feasibility and effects of a novel concept of supramaximal High-Intensity Training on muscle, brain, cardiovascular, and psychological function among physically inactive older people. All data for this first phase is collected. The second phase will be focusing on implementing the training method in real life setting, in collaboration with seniors, training facilities, and senior organizations. We are looking for a candidate with an interest in both analyzing existing structural and functional MRI data as well as working on the second phase, the implementation of the training program.

Summary: The doctoral student will work within Business Administration at Umeå School of Business, Economics, and Statistics (USBE) of Umeå University. As a Ph.D. student, you should take doctoral courses and do an independent research project within finance. The course part of the doctoral education amounts to 90 ECTS, while the research (thesis) to 150 ECTS. Summary: This research group of Umeå University is focused on the design and synthesis of artificial membranes for gas separation, energy storage, and production. Currently, we focuses on designing and synthesizing new polymeric membranes for harvesting blue energy. In collaboration with Professor Frank Lipnizki research group at Lund University, we are going to develop a robust system for harvesting blue energy based on Swedish natural and artificial resources. The project is interdisciplinary, and the postdoctoral candidate will have the opportunity to plan and develop routes to synthesize novel membranes. The research involves the theoretical calculations for estimating the extractable energy, design, synthesis, and testing of new membranes, characterizing the membrane, and applying the prepared membrane in a lab scale unit.

Position Title: Postdoctor in Molecular mechanisms of Mediator in yeast stress responses

Applicants must also have previous experience of working with S. cerevisiae as a model organism. Experience of working with transcription and transcription factors is a requirement. Previous experience of cloning, expression and purification of recombinant proteins in E. coli is an advantage. Position Title: Postdoctor in Composition of Mediator in A. thaliana in stress responses

We are looking for highly motivated applicants with experience working with Arabidopsis thaliana. The applicant must also have documented experience of generating and characterizing different types of arabidopsis mutants, extensive laboratory experience using molecular and biochemical methods, of different types of biochemical purification of proteins, of work with abiotic and / or biotic stress in arabidopsis. Experience of purifying large protein complexes is an advantage. Previous experience of working with cryo-EM is an advantage.

Summary: The Department of Medical Chemistry and Biophysics of Umeå University is looking for a postdoctoral fellow for 2 years to study the composition of the Mediator Complex in Arabidopsis thaliana in response to various types of stress. The research group is part of the Chemical Biological Center and is affiliated to the Umeå Plant Science Center; two stimulating research environments at Umeå University. We are looking for a motivated candidate to do research within the project “Evolutionarily conserved mechanisms for stress that converge on Mediator and chromatin structure” funded by the Foundation for Strategic Research.

Position Title: PhD Student Position in Computer Science – Detection of Contextual Political Communication

Requirements: The applicant is required to have completed a second-cycle level degree, or completed course requirements of at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 ECTS credits are at second-cycle level, or have an equivalent education from acquired in another system, or equivalent qualifications. To fulfil the specific entry requirements for doctoral studies in computing science, the applicant is required to either have completed courses equivalent to 90 ECTS credits in computer science. However, due to the multidisciplinary nature of the project, it is permissible that at most 20 of these credits are substituted for credits in politics, media and communication, statistics, discrete mathematics, or mathematical modelling.

Since research is conducted in an international research environment, the ability to collaborate and contribute to teamwork, and a very good command of the English language, both written and spoken, are key requirements. Candidates are expected to have a background in computer science; a specialization in artificial intelligence or machine learning is a merit. Candidates from related disciplines, with a very good understanding of fundamental concepts of computer science and good programming experience, may also be considered. Candidates should furthermore have an interest in political communication.

Summary: The PhD student will contribute to a multidisciplinary theory of AI-driven contextual communication. The project combines qualitative and quantitative methods and is conducted under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Johanna Björklund and Jesper Strömbäck, Professor in journalism and political communication at the University of Gothenburg. The student will receive education in machine learning, algorithm analysis, and empirical methods, as well as behavioural, communication and audience studies.

Position Title: ERC-funded postdoc position to study microsporidian biology (cryo-EM/ET)

Requirements: You must have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Structural Biology, or similar. The Ph.D. degree should not be awarded more than three years ago at the time of application. A strong background in structural biology is needed. Significant experience in cryo-EM and cryo-ET is required, i.e. you need solid hands-on expertise with cryo-ET data collection (SerialEM), processing, and subtomogram averaging (e.g. IMOD, Protomo, Dynamo, Warp/M, RELION, etc.). The ideal candidate has a strong background in cryo-ET data collection and analysis and has used subtomogram averaging successfully to visualize a challenging cellular structure. Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English and a high level of interpersonal skills are required. The ability to work as part of a team and independently is expected.

Summary: This is an EU-funded position and part of the ERC project PolTube. PolTube aims to use structural biology to visualize the unique (infection) biology of microsporidia. Microsporidia are opportunistic pathogens of almost all animals and possess fascinating biological features such as the smallest eukaryotic genome or a specialized infection apparatus. You will join a driven and interdisciplinary team of structural biologists, biochemists, and cell biologists and use your solid cryo-EM and cryo-ET expertise to move forward an ongoing, collaborative structural biology project and take the lead in future cryo-ET projects within the aims of PolTube.

Position Title: Postdoctoral position to study mycobacterial ribosome biology (cryo-EM)

Requirements: The candidate must have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Microbiology, or similar.  The Ph.D. degree should not be awarded more than three years ago at the time of application. Hands-on expertise in molecular biology, biochemistry, and microbiology in general, and ideally in Mycobacterial biology, is required. The ideal candidate has a background in Mycobacteria culturing (e.g., large-scale culturing of M. smegmatis or similar organisms for protein overexpression) and genomic engineering (e.g., has successfully used modern techniques for genome manipulation to obtain knockouts or knock-ins).

Also, experience with bacterial expression and purification of recombinant proteins (ideally in M. smegmatis) and RNA/protein biochemistry is required. A background in structural biology is needed (i.e., preferably cryo-EM or alternatively X-ray crystallography). Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English and a high level of interpersonal skills are required, and the ability to work as part of a team as well as independently is expected.

Summary: The project of Umeå University will involve the characterization of the translation apparatus from Mycobacteria using in-vivo assays, RNA-protein biochemistry, and cryo-electron microscopy. The goal is to identify and study ribosome-associated factors in an unbiased way, provide structural information and uncover unique species-specific mechanisms that could later serve as novel targets for antibiotics.

Position Title: PhD student position in chemistry- Enzymatic modification of lignin

Summary: The research project of Umeå University is focused on basic aspects of enzymes that catalyze redox reactions in connection with the biodegradation of polymers in biomass, primarily lignin. The purpose of the research is to gain a better understanding of the roles different enzymes play in the degradation processes and how the enzymes act together in concert. Techniques that are important for conducting the research include expression, purification and characterization of recombinant enzymes, as well as proteomics and advanced chemical analysis of complex reaction mixtures with oligomeric and polymeric substrates and reaction products.

Position Title: WASP AI Program: PhD position in Optimization and Machine Learning

Requirements: The PhD student will be admitted to third-cycle studies in either mathematical statistics (MS) or computational science and engineering (CSE) with specialization in mathematical statistics.

To be admitted for studies at third-cycle level the applicant is required to have completed a second-cycle level degree, or completed course requirements of at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 ECTS credits are at second-cycle level, or have an equivalent education from abroad, or equivalent qualifications.

For third-cycle studies in Mathematical Statistics, the applicant is required to have completed at least 60 ECTS credits within the field of mathematical statistics, statistics and mathematics, of which at least 15 ECTS credits shall have been acquired at second-cycle level.

For third-cycle studies in CSE, the applicant is required to have completed at least 90 ECTS credits in CSE courses, of which at least 30 ECTS credits shall have been acquired at second-cycle level. CSE courses refer to courses with major quantitative, statistical or computing science elements, such as courses in computing science, mathematics and mathematical statistics.

Applicants who in some other system either within Sweden or abroad have acquired largely equivalent skills are also eligible.

Programming skills (preferably MatLab or Python) are required. Good knowledge of English language, both written and spoken, are key requirements. Documented knowledge and experience in optimization and machine learning are merit.

Summary: The interplay between optimization and machine learning is the cornerstone of many important advances in inference systems and artificial intelligence in the last decade. The vast majority of machine learning applications are modeled and solved as an optimization problem. To accommodate the increasing complexity of problem models along with massive amounts of data, machine learning entails the development of new optimization methods. In contrast to the traditional black-box optimization framework, an end-to-end view of modeling and optimization is central to these novel algorithms.

Requirements: To be enrolled to PhD research education the applicant must fulfill general requirements by having an exam on advanced level, or finished courses corresponding to at least 240 hp, of which at least 60 should be on advanced level, or have corresponding education approved outside Sweden, or possess corresponding qualifications.

To fulfill the specific requirements to be enrolled to PhD research education in Experimental Physics the applicant should have at least 120 hp of approved courses in the subject physics. Applicants with master exam in Chemistry, Material Science of Physical Engineering who fulfill this requirement are also welcome to apply. Additionally, good level of written and spoken English is a requirement.
Previous experience and competence with carbon materials (graphene, graphite oxide, carbon nanotubes) and electrochemical characterization of supercapacitors is not obligatory but is an advantage. The applicant should be motivated, dedicated to work towards an aim, and have good ability to work with mainly experimental assignments both independently and in a research group.

Summary: It is looking for candidates interested in research on graphene-related materials for energy storage applications. Position Title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Sociology (Umeå University)

Position Title: Post-doctoral research position in Social Work at Umeå University

This research environment is seeking a young researcher with an interest in quantitative research on issues such as educational stratification and educational system design in relation to various outcomes. The research can be based on country comparisons as well as on longitudinal analysis or time series analysis within a single country. Researchers in the environment currently work with data from PISA, HBSC, CILS4EU, EU-SILC and Swedish register data, but other data sources can also be used.

Position Title: PhD student i Psychology in a project on intrinsic motivation for cognition at Umeå University

The announced position concerns fulltime emplyment as a doctoral student with the aim of achieving a doctorate. The doctoral student’s main task is to follow the syllabus of the doctoral program, which includes carrying out research within the project, as well as taking doctoral program courses. You are expected to carry out most of the work at the Department of Psychology at the University of Umeå. Work tasks may also include teaching and other departmental tasks (up to 20%). The position is time limited to four years for full time study and may be extended by up to one year dependent on extent of departmental work. In a first round, the employment contract is for one year, and is then renewed every 2 years under the condition that the individual study plan is being followed.

Summary: What makes thinking so satisfying that we occasionally immerse ourselves in it for its own sake? In this project, we test the idea that cognitive uncertainty such as in perception, memory and problem solving explains the satisfaction of finding their answers. We use lab based behavioral experiments in conjunction with bio marker recordings, online experiments and brain imaging (fMRI) to test this idea.

Good skills in both spoken and written English are a requirement for the position. Evaluation of these skills is made by having the intended PhD student present his/her research plan in English for the Department’s designated postgraduate education group.

It is a merit if the applicant has practical experience of research in different biochemical methods of analysis and cell culturing of fibroblast-like cells including mechanical loading models. We are looking for a candidate with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Great focus will be given to the candidate’s potential collaborative skills and suitability for the project which are especially considered in the assessment of the candidate’s qualifications. It is a merit if the applicant has experience of research within the research field of connective tissue.

Summary: The project aims at identifying novel signaling molecules regulating the process of wound healing in connective tissue with a focus on tendon cells. More specifically the project will address if myoblast secretome stimulates parameters of tendon healing and if the effect depends on the intensity and type of the mechanical loading regime of myoblasts. We also seek to uncover novel signaling molecules regulating the process. To test if detected molecules can apply to all forms of connective tissue cells we will also include other cell types, such as corneal stromal cells.(Umeå University)

Summary: The malaria parasite causes disease by invading and replicating within red blood cells. The interaction between the parasite and host determines the outcome of infection and disease. In our lab we develop and apply high throughput genetic screening tools to identify and characterise novel molecular determinants of malaria parasite-host interactions.

The applicant must have documented research experience in the field of informatics/information systems, digital innovation and digital transformation. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the closing date of the application. Documented experience of research in the social sciences and experience of advanced qualitative and/or quantitative methods.

Assessment will be conducted on the basis of the candidate’s potential for acting as a positive force within SCDI. Requirements: You are required to have completed a second-cycle level degree, or completed course requirements of at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 ECTS credits are at second-cycle level, or have an equivalent education from abroad, or equivalent qualifications.

To fulfil the specific entry requirements to be admitted for studies at third-cycle level in chemistry, you are required to have completed first-cycle courses of at least 90 ECTS credits within the field of chemistry, or in a subject considered to be directly relevant for the specialization in question. Of those 90 ECTS credits, at least 15 ECTS credits shall have been acquired at second-cycle level within the specialization in question, or an equivalent subject.

Very good command of the English language, both written and spoken, is required. The applicant must have competence of organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry, as well as training and/or experience in organic synthesis. You should have a genuine interest in organic- and medicinal chemistry and be prepared to take on scientific and technical challenges. You should be creative, with good interpersonal and collaborative skills, power of initiative, and a high degree of independence. Experiences of protein expression, biochemical and biological evaluations, X-ray crystallography and computational chemistry are merits.

Summary: The objective of the research project is to develop biologically active organic molecules that can be used as chemical tools aimed at meeting the fast-growing demands of basic research in the area of metacaspases (MCs). These enzymes are present in all kingdoms of life, except for animals, and highly selective and specific probes with MC-modulating activity will generate new knowledge regarding the proteases’ structure and function. The results of this project will not only have a transformative impact on the field of MC research but will as well impel large and multidisciplinary community of scientists studying animal caspases. That fact that MCs are found in protozoa but not in humans makes it an attractive target for development of anti-parasitic drugs. Finding inhibitors or activators specific for protozoa MC will not only give valuable insights into the inter-species differences of MC function, but may also be a means of modulating virulence of parasitic protozoa, like Trypanosoma and Leishmania, in mammals thereby reducing their pathogenicity. The PhD candidate will design and synthesize molecules that inhibit or enhance the function of metacaspases by targeting active or allosteric sites. This project will be carried out within a research group that uses multidisciplinary approaches to address medicinal chemistry research questions.

Position Title: Doctoral student in marine environmental chemistry at Umeå University

Position Type: Temporary position longer than 6 months (100%)

Requirements: To be admitted to postgraduate education, the applicant must have basic eligibility through a completed degree at advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or equivalent foreign education, or equivalent qualifications.

In order to meet the requirement for special eligibility to be admitted to postgraduate education in chemistry, the applicant must have a basic higher education of at least 90 higher education credits in chemistry or other subjects that are deemed to be directly relevant to the relevant specialization. Of the 90 higher education credits, at least 15 higher education credits at advanced level in analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry or equivalent must be included. Good knowledge of English in both speech and writing is a requirement.

Further education in marine chemistry or marine ecology is an advantage.
