Job Description


-Duties in the molecular laboratory will include extraction and purification of DNA and RNA, performing PCRs, running agarose gels and sequencing amplicons; molecular cloning and associated activities including making LB agarose plates, preparing and aliquoting competent cells for cloning and sequencing new clones; dishwashing; preparing laboratory solutions; and general laboratory maintenance within the purview of good laboratory practices.

-Duties in the insectary include Drosophila husbandry including preparation of food, monthly maintenance of Drosophila stocks, and performing genetic crosses and scoring of phenotypes and genotypes. Will aid in the supervision and training of student workers.

-Oversee the organizing and maintenance of chemicals, reagents, enzymes and common stocks; serve as lab liaison for academic and nonacademic sales inquiries and interact with departmental administrators and support staff; provide general lab assistance and distribution of lab resources; set-up service calls for damaged equipment; and order reagents and supplies.

-Collect and analyze data, assist postdoc and PI in preparing and writing project reports.

-Other duties as required/needed.

Required Education:

B.S. in Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biology or closely related field.

Preferred Education:

M.S. in Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biology or closely related field.

Required Experience:

Two years demonstrated experience working in a genetics or molecular biology laboratory including experience in basic molecular techniques.

Preferred Experience:

Experience in Drosophila husbandry and molecular cloning.

Required Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Proficient in basic techniques of molecular biology; excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively use a personal computer and applicable software, create databases, perform statistical analysis, present data in lab meetings and perform other computer related tasks; familiarity with appropriate laboratory and/or technical equipment; ability to multi task and work cooperatively with others; demonstrated ability to organize tasks and prioritize work with minimal supervision.


Work may require standing at work bench for extended periods of time.
