Job Description

A postdoc position is immediately available in the laboratory of Andrea Bertke at Virginia Tech for a highly motivated individual to investigate SARS-CoV-2 related to food and food processing. Under general guidance of the PI, the candidate will participate in a research program that integrates virology and food safety. This position provides an opportunity to work with a multi-disciplinary team providing rapid bench-to-stakeholder translational research with direct application to the food processing industry and consumers. The postdoc will participate in multiple research projects in the laboratory and be responsible for designing and performing experiments, analyzing data, assisting with manuscript and grant preparation, and training and supervising other lab personnel. The postdoc will work collaboratively with other team researchers and support PI and Co-PIs involved in this project. The position will be located in Blacksburg, Virginia, with programmatic linkages in the Departments of Food Science and Technology (FST), Seafood AREC, Agricultural, Leadership, and Community Education, and Population Health Sciences in the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech.

Required Qualifications

PhD in virology, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry or related field awarded no more than 4 years prior to initial date of employment is required. Previous research experience working with pathogens, preferably viruses, in BSL2 environments is required. Preference will be given to candidates with BSL3 experience. Applicant must possess strong analytical skills, strong written and oral communication skills with ability to develop manuscripts, presentations, and assist in preparation of grant proposals. Evidence of successful work on a multi-disciplinary team with a proven track record of publications and self-motivation is a must. Underrepresented minorities are especially encouraged to apply. Candidate must be currently residing in and legally permitted to work in the US, as COVID-19 prevents support of a new visa.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with food safety, food engineering, and generation of pseudotyped viruses using lentiviral vectors is desired.
