A Postdoctoral Research position is available in the Laboratory of Developmental Neurobiology of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, NIH, headed by Dr. Herbert Geller. Research in the lab is centered around the role of extracellular matrix molecules and their signaling mechanisms. We have identified a novel family of such proteins, called Plasticity-Related Genes (official name Protein Lipid Phosphate Phosphatase Related (PLPPR) Genes), as being involved in this response. Our cell biology experiments demonstrate a role of the PRG proteins in controlling cytoskeletal dynamics (Tilve S, Iweka CA, Bao J, Hawken N, Mencio CP, Geller HM. Exp Cell Res. 2020 Apr 15;389(2):111911, DOI: 10.1093/glycob/cwaa060, and Iweka, et al., J. Neurochem, in press).
A major goal of the project is to determine the role of these PRG proteins in vivo using knockout animals that already exist in the laboratory, as well as mechanistic studies in cell culture models. Projects in the lab take advantage of modern tools in cell and molecular biology, especially proteomics, genomics, and live cell and super-resolution and light sheet microscopy available in NHLBI core facilities, as well as laboratory expertise in glycobiology and neurobiology. The ideal candidate will be a recent (no more than 3 years post Ph.D.) or soon-to-be Ph.D. with some experience in with animal histology and an interest in a future career studying neural development and regeneration.
